How to Repair or Fix the Chipped Paint on a Ceiling or a Wall

Fixing chipped paint on a ceiling or wall is something every home owner faces sooner or later. The chips can occur when a foreign object strikes the wall and nicks the paint job. If the area is repaired before repainting, then the paint gathers in the crevices and corners of the chip and makes the chip even more obvious to the eye. You can repair the chip so no one will ever know it was there.

Things You'll Need

  • Quick drying repair mud
  • Putty knife, 2 or 3 inches (depending on paint chip size)
  • Sanding block, 120-grit
  • Drywall priming paint
  • Paint brush
  • Finish paint

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area of the paint chip.

    • 2

Open a small tub of quick-drying repair mud.

    • 3

Dip the blade of the putty knife into the mud and take out enough mud to fill the hole.

    • 4

Spread the mud over the paint-chipped area until the hole is filled flush with the surrounding surface area.

    • 5

Scrape the blade directly over the hole flush with the surrounding surface.

    • 6

Allow the mud to dry for 2 to 3 hours.

    • 7

Sand the mud with a 120-grit sanding block.

    • 8

Apply a second coat of mud over the first layer.

    • 9

      Allow this coat to dry.

    • 10

Sand the area again until the repair is flush with the surrounding surface area. Keep the sanding block flat on the surface to avoid gouging out the repair mud.

    • 11

Prime the mud with some drywall primer paint using a paint brush.

    • 12

Allow the primer to dry for a few hours.

    • 13

Paint over the primer paint with a color matching the rest of the wall or ceiling. Feather the brush strokes out so they won't be visible when the paint dries.
