How to Paint the Floors in a Mobile Home

The floors of a mobile home are usually made of a wood composite or particle board. These boards are a wood product held together with glue. When a mobile home is recarpeted it is always a good idea to repaint the floors before laying new carpet. Painting can eliminate odors from pets and mildew. A wood primer is all you need for the task if you're adding carpet. If the floors won't be carpeted, you'll need a primer and a specially formulated finish paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Prep the floor by filling any holes with wood putty. Apply the putty with a stiff-edged putty knife. Allow the putty to dry 24 hours.

    • 2

Sand the putty smooth with the surface area of the floor, using a 100-grit sanding block.

    • 3

Vacuum the corners and along the edges of the floor to remove all dust, dirt and debris.

    • 4

Run a piece of masking tape around the bottom of the walls surrounding the floor to avoid paint splatter.

    • 5

Open doors and windows to provide adequate ventilation. Turn a fan on if possible.

    • 6

Pour 1/2 gallon of primer paint into the painter's floor pan.

    • 7

Load the bristles of a paintbrush with primer and paint the edges and corners of the floor. Paint a straight line along these edges by pushing the bristles of the brush into the corners. The masking tape will help keep paint off the walls, but don't push too much or paint may seep under the tape. Paint a frame around the floor, at least 4 inches out from the wall.

    • 8

Put the nap on the roller frame and screw the extension pole into the roller frame's handle.

    • 9

Load the roller with paint by dipping it into the primer and then rolling it back and forth on the pan.

    • 10

Walk to the wall farthest from the exit and begin rolling primer paint onto the floor one roller width at a time. Paint the entire floor. Roll out any lines in the paint caused by the overlapping roller edges.

    • 11

Clean the primer paint out of the roller, paintbrush and paint tray. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.

    • 12

Sand the floor with a pole sander equipped with 150-grit sandpaper. Do this lightly to avoid sanding off the primer paint.

    • 13

Pour 1/2 gallon of finish paint into the paint tray. Cut in the wall and roll the floor just like you applied the primer paint. Keep the roller wet throughout the painting process to ensure proper coverage. Wait 24 hours.

    • 14

Apply a second coat of finish paint. Remove the masking tape around the bottom of the floor and clean up your tools.
