How to Get Grease Off the Wall Before Painting

Applying a fresh coat of paint can be a good way to add new life to a room in a home. Before applying that coat of paint, it is often necessary to address the existing paint or wall to make minor repairs or remove substances that could interfere with the new paint adhering properly. Grease spatter is a common occurrence on walls around a stovetop in the kitchen. Before painting an area like this, it is necessary to remove the grease.

Rag
White vinegar
Liquid dish detergent
Water
Container
Liquid degreaser

Instructions

  Wipe excess grease from the wall with a rag. Remove as much of the excess grease as possible before attempting to clean the area.

  Pour a small amount of white vinegar on a rag. Blot the grease area on the wall with the vinegar and allow the vinegar to penetrate the grease. Wipe the grease away with a rag or apply more vinegar to the grease spot if necessary.

  Add a few drops of liquid dish detergent to a container and then add water. Mix the detergent and water as the container fills.

  Dip a rag into the soapy solution and dab the grease spot on the wall. Continue working the soapy solution into the grease until it breaks down and releases. Wipe the grease away with the rag.

  Spray a small amount of liquid degreaser onto a rag. Blot the grease stain to force the degreaser into the stain. Allow the degreaser to penetrate the grease for a few minutes and wipe away.
