How to Paint a Bathroom Light Fixture

Clean the fixture with a wet rag to remove residue and dirt. Spray an all-purpose cleaner and use cotton swabs in hard-to-reach areas to remove dirt. Wipe the fixture dry with a towel.

Lightly sand the fixture with a medium-grit sanding block. Roll up sandpaper to sand crevices and difficult areas. Wipe the fixture with a damp towel to remove any dust created by sanding. Allow to dry.

Place the fixture in a large cardboard box with one side cut open. Work in a well-ventilated area. Shake a bottle of spray-on bonding primer for about 30 seconds. Use black primer if you are painting the light fixture a dark color or any metallic shade. Use white primer if you are painting the fixture a light, solid color.

Hold the spray can 4 inches to 6 inches from the surface of the light fixture. Press down the spray nozzle and slowly dispense the paint in long, even strokes covering the fixture. Several light coats may be required. Add coats of paint until a solid, opaque base coat appears.

Paint the light fixture the final color. Use a damp sea sponge and dab on the paint for an appearance of texture. This technique works well for metallic paint. You might need to add several coats. Spray on a solid coat of spray paint using the same technique as the bonding primer. Allow to dry 24 hours and then place the fixture in your bathroom.
