How to Paint Around Scallop Wallpaper

Many people rely on tape to provide clean edges while painting. However, there are times when tape is not an option, such as when you are painting next to wallpaper. Experienced painters know that the secret is using the right paintbrush. A high-quality angled brush helps you maintain control in the trickiest situations. Using a small brush allows you even to apply paint right up to the edge of scalloped wallpaper.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect the surfaces around where you will be painting. Fabric drop cloths provide a safe, non-slip surface for floors. Drape thin, plastic sheeting over furniture and counters.

    • 2

Select a brush that is the appropriate size to paint around the edge of scalloped wallpaper. A synthetic bristle brush is good choice to use with latex paints.

    • 3

Dip your brush in a water container. Moisten the bristles, including those in the ferrule---the metal part---of the brush. Shake out excess water. Smooth the bristles with a brush comb.

    • 4

Dip the brush into the paint. Do not allow the paint to go more than halfway up the bristles.

    • 5

Run the brush along the edge of the paint can, carefully wiping off excess paint from both sides of the brush. Keep the brush fairly dry when applying paint along a difficult edge.

    • 6

Apply the paint along the scalloped edge of the wallpaper. Brush the paint out, away from the wallpaper. Aim to paint as close as you can, without touching the wallpaper.

    • 7

Keep a damp rag on hand to quickly blot any paint that may get on the wallpaper. Using too much water can damage a paper surface.

    • 8

Apply two thin coats along the wallpaper, rather than one thick coat of paint. Switch to a larger brush or a roller to paint the rest of the surface.
