DIY Paint Repair

Keep the interior of your home looking good by fixing unsightly paint peels, chips and cracks as soon as you notice them. Timely repairs will also stop the spread of any damage to your walls and ceiling. You can use fine-grit sandpaper to level peels, then paint over the affected area to hide the blemishes. Use touch-up paint that matches the color of the wall or ceiling. Use small-gauge brushes and small, light brushstrokes for your touch-ups.

Instructions

  1. Peeling

    • 1

Set up the ladder near the place where the paint is peeling. Climb up until you reach a level where it will be comfortable to work. Break off the peeling paint to remove it from the surface. Cut off half a sheet of sandpaper.

    • 2

Place the sandpaper at the base of the peel mark. Slowly start rubbing the area and move all around the peel mark. Continue to rub until the area is even and smooth and the paint is flush with the wall or ceiling.

    • 3

Shake the can of touch-up paint. Open the lid carefully so as not to spill any paint. Dip the small brush into the can. Dab the brush on the side of the can to blot. Paint the area using light pressure, making all the strokes in the same direction, until the area is covered.

    Chips and Cracks

    • 4

Shake the can of paint and remove the lid carefully to avoid spilling paint. Dip the brush into the can. Blot the brush on the side of the can's rim.

    • 5

Lightly paint the chip or crack in one brushstroke. Examine the new paint and allow it to dry for several minutes. Compare the new paint to the old paint of the wall or ceiling and determine if you need to apply another coat.

    • 6

Apply extra coats as needed. Allow the paint to dry.
