Types of Wall Paint

Taking the time to carefully select the appropriate types of wall paint for your home is one of the most important steps to planning a painting project. Selecting a suitable wall paint depends on the condition of the surface being painted, the location of the room and of course, personal preference.
  1. Matte

    • Matte wall paints are often associated with flat paints. Many flat paints sold on the market closely resemble the subtle sheen of matte paint. Matte paints for interior walls are water-based and contain minimal sheen. Matte paint appears flat from a frontal view, with a slight angular sheen. The non-reflective surface of matte paint hides unsightly drywall defects, but allows minimal wall cleaning. Use a matte paint finish on walls in low-traffic areas of a home.

    Eggshell

    • Eggshell paint absorbs less light than matte once dried and provides a slightly stronger and more noticeable sheen. The smooth surface of the paint allows wall cleaning without marring the paint finish. Eggshell paint is often used in bathrooms, kids rooms, small foyers and hallways receiving daily traffic from humans and pets. There are also specially formulated eggshell bathroom paints, which protect walls from high moisture and mildew growth. Eggshell hides minor wall defects.

    Satin

    • The velvety finish of satin paint is probably its most notable characteristic. Satin paints for interior walls are water-based and shine brighter than eggshell paint. A satin paint may turn out surprisingly shiny for someone who prefers a sheen similar to matte or eggshell. Satin paint should not be used on walls in poor shape, because the reflective surface draws attention to defects and drywall seams. Satin paint is very washable and recommended for walls in high-traffic rooms.

    Enamel

    • In the past, enamel paints were strictly oil-based, but now there are latex-based enamels for painting interior walls. Latex enamel paint costs less than traditional oil-based enamels and provide the same benefits without the harmful fumes and longer drying time. Enamel paint is sold in a flat finish, or glossy finishes similar to eggshell and satin. Enamel paint reduces brush and roller marks and dries hard for added durability. The hard, but smooth surface, provides a highly washable finish for walls in a busy home.
