How to Get Rid of Acrylic Paint Stains on a Ceiling

If you have acrylic paint stains on your ceiling --- something you might experience in a children's room in which someone has sponged designs on the ceiling, for example --- you can cover them up by painting the ceiling. This is the easiest and most effective way to get rid of acrylic paint stains. Often you can accomplish this with one coat of primer and one coat of flat white paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Tarp
  • Painter's tape
  • Goggles
  • Ladder
  • Roller brush
  • Extender
  • Primer
  • Screwdriver
  • Paint stick
  • Paint tray
  • White, matte paint

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a tarp across the room to catch falling paint.

    • 2

Tape off the border on the wall just under the ceiling with painter's tape to protect the wall from getting primer or white paint on it. You will need to use a ladder, so ask a helper to steady it for you.

    • 3

Put on goggles to protect your eyes from falling paint.

    • 4

Attach the roller brush to the extender so that you can reach the ceiling while you stand on the floor.

    • 5

Open the primer, using a screwdriver to pry open the lid. Mix it thoroughly with a paint stick and then pour it into the paint tray. Cover your roller brush with primer by rolling it in the tray. Your brush should not drip with paint.

Roll the brush across the ceiling in a zigzag form using one stroke. Go back over the zigzag and fill in the spaces between the zigzag. Repeat this until the entire ceiling is covered in primer. If you still see the acrylic paint stains, allow the primer to dry for 24 to 48 hours and then reapply primer. Allow the primer to completely dry before applying white paint with a matte finish to the ceiling using the same technique described in Step 6.
