How to Paint Smooth Drywall

Smooth drywall surfaces must be prepared prior to painting to ensure good paint adhesion and a professional appearance. The surface must be clean and free of the dust that inevitably accumulates on drywall during the manufacturing and installation process. Use a special type of primer containing PVA, or polyvinyl acetate, which is a type of resin formulated for new drywall, before painting in a color of your choosing.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down all drywall surfaces with microfiber cloths to remove dust that would otherwise mar your paint job.

    • 2

Spread dropcloths on the floor around your work area.

    • 3

Mix the drywall primer thoroughly and pour into a paint tray.

    • 4

Apply the drywall primer in long, even strokes with a roller brush. Let the primer dry for 24 hours. One coat of primer is typically sufficient for drywall. If the primer finish appears uneven, apply a second coat and let dry.

    • 5

Paint the dried, primed surface of the drywall with roller brushes for a smooth finish, using a paint formulated for indoor use in the color of your choice.
