Importance of Colors in Decoration

• The choice of color for your interior is important because it affects the perception of a room, regarding both atmosphere and volume. Colors create perspectives that may change your assessment of the length, width, height and depth of a room. Thus, a small room may seem larger if painted in a single light color or white.

Using the Color Wheel

• A color wheel is a handy tool designed to help you mix and match colors. The tool consists of a circle representing the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow) and the secondary colors obtained by mixing these primary colors. By using this circle, you can view the colors in harmony or contrast. Contrasting colors are diametrically opposed on the circle (red and green, yellow and purple) while harmonious colors are closer to one another on the circle (light green, almond green and olive green).

Color Symbolism

• When choosing colors for your home, consider that traditionally each color is associated with certain feelings or symbolism. Red inspires sensuality, warmth and energy, but also violence and aggression. Avoid painting an entire room in red, as this may have an irritating effect. Yellow is a bright color, associated with joy and prosperity. The color of joy par excellence is orange, which is known for fighting depression and reviving good mood. Blue is a relaxing color and it stimulates inspiration and creativity. Green is a soothing color associated with nature. Purple is associated with tenderness, romance and sensitivity, and it promotes calm. Neutral colors, such as honey, cream, beige and gray shades are timeless and elegant, and they ;lend a soft and serene atmosphere to a room.

Space Observations

• If you want to a room to look bigger, you should use a low-contrast color palette. This means you should not choose colors from opposite sides of the color wheel. Warm colors may make a large room look more intimate, so high-contrast colors are a good idea in this case. For a room with a low ceiling, a lighter color overhead than that of the walls may make the ceiling appear lifted.
