Painting the Doors of Vinyl Cabinets

Changing the look of your kitchen doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. A few coats of paint on the walls, a new rug or two, and a quick update to your cabinets will modernize your kitchen -- without having to hire professionals. Repainting your vinyl cabinets may sound like a daunting task, but is something you can easily do yourself with paint from your local home-improvement store. Specially designed vinyl paint is no more complicated to apply than any indoor wall latex.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the kitchen floor in newspaper or drop cloths to protect it. Unscrew the hinges and pull each cabinet door off of the cabinet base. Place the hinges and screws in a small bowl so that they are easily accessible when it comes time to reassemble the doors.

    • 2

Pull each drawer out of the cabinet base. Unscrew the brackets holding each drawer facing on. Place the drawer body off to the side and out of the way.

    • 3

Remove the handles and pulls from each cabinet door and drawer facing. Place them in the bowl with the hinges.

    • 4

Lay each door and drawer facing flat on the drop cloth with the side to be painted pointing upwards.

    • 5

Reinforce any loose sections of vinyl by applying a thin layer of glue between the vinyl facing and wood underneath. Let dry overnight.

    • 6

Sand the vinyl surface of each cabinet door and drawer facing with fine-grit sandpaper. Rough up the surface slightly to help the paint adhere. Brush away any vinyl residue with a large paintbrush. Sand the cabinet base, as well, if it is to be painted.

    • 7

Pour 2 inches of vinyl paint primer into a paint pan. Apply a thin coat of the primer to the cabinet doors and drawer facings with a small paint roller. Cover the cabinet base with primer if painting it is included in your design scheme. Allow the paint to air-dry overnight. Wash the paint roller and pan.

Repeat Step 7 with vinyl paint instead of primer. Allow each coat to dry overnight, repeating as necessary until the desired effect has been achieved.
