How to Paint an Aluminum Freezer

If you have an aluminum freezer, it may not coordinate with the rest of your appliances or decor. This doesn't mean you need to replace a functional appliance. Instead, you can give it a fresh look with paint. Prime the freezer properly before painting to ensure the paint lasts. Use high-quality paint, such as 100 percent acrylic, for a durable, richly colored finish that is easy to clean.

  • Sandpaper, 100- and 220-grit
  • Bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Sand all parts of the freezer that you are going to paint with 100-grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface and eliminate any scratches or imperfections. Follow with 220-grit sandpaper to get smooth, even surface that is still rough enough for the paint to adhere to.

    • 2

Wash the freezer with a mixture of 1 cup trisodium phosphate in 1 gallon of water using a sponge or rag. This will clean off the sanding dust and any other residue. Rinse with clear water and dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Prime the freezer using a bristle brush or sponge roller brush and 100 percent acrylic primer. Allow the primer to cure according to package instructions.

    • 4

Paint a coat of 100 percent acrylic paint using a bristle brush or sponge roller. Allow it to cure completely, and then apply a second coat for coverage that will last.
