How to Measure Plywood for Windows for a Hurricane

There are two correct ways to measure plywood for window protection during a hurricane. One is considered a interior mount using Plylox clips. The second is an exterior mount using Tapcons or other fasteners to mount to the exterior of the home, outside of the window frame itself. Interior is recommended to those with little or no tools or home improvement experience. Also note that plywood is not a rated form of hurricane protection but is always better than no window protection at all.

Instructions

  1. Interior Plywood Application

    • 1

Measure the window opening height from top to bottom of the casing, minus 1/4 inch. The recorded width should be the measured width from side to side of the casing, minus 1/4 inch. This will give 1/8 inch clearance all the way around.

    • 2

Work left to right, and floor by floor, recording each windows measurement.

    • 3

Give each window a designated name or number for future reference.

    Exterior Mounted Plywood

    • 4

Measure the window's opening, consistently measure height, then width of each window. Sticking to this method helps keep you from making careless measuring mistakes.

    • 5

Add 5 inches to each dimension. So, if a window measures 24 inches wide, Record it as 29 inches wide. This gives you around 2 1/2 inches of plywood on each side past the window opening.

    • 6

    • 7
