How to Install Aluminum & Steel Hurricane Panels

To protect your home during a hurricane, start by covering your window's opening correctly with a hurricane shutter system. Hurricane shutters can be expensive and installing your own can be a great way to save money. Installation can cost as much as the product when you go through a professional shutter company. Instead, install your own aluminum or steel hurricane panels using a horizontal mounting system.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window opening's width. Next measure a hurricane panel's length. Find the difference between those numbers and divide that number by two. This gives you the amount each side of the panel should overhang the opening by.

    • 2

Hold the panel at the bottom and center of the opening, with a level check for levelness.

    • 3

Once the panel is level mark all fastener holes with a pencil. Remove the hurricane panel and use a drill to drill on your pencil marks. Use the correct size drill bit for the fasteners used.

    • 4

Insert fasteners into holes and secure the hurricane panel to the window opening.

    • 5

Place the next hurricane panel into place just above the first and repeat the previous steps until the opening is completely covered.
