How to Remove a Black Spacer in a Shower Valve

Some shower valves require a spacer between the cover and the cartridge. This spacer is usually black, however, the process to remove it is the same no matter the color. It's also generally the same removal process for all brands. This spacer allows certain styles of handles to attach to the faucet. If you are replacing your shower handle, and it does not require a spacer, remove it by following a simple procedure.

  Shut off the water in the home. Remove the plastic cover on top of the handle if your faucet has one. Unscrew the set screw underneath using an Allen wrench. If there is no cover, find the set screw in the handle by looking around the base for a small, round screw hole. Remove the screw with an Allen wrench. Keep the screw and handle for use elsewhere; if you are installing a new handle, it will come with its own screw.

  Unscrew the screws from the trim behind the faucet on the wall of your shower. Take the plate off the shower wall and unscrew the screws in the bracket behind the plate if there is one. Remove this bracket as well.

  Take the sleeve -- the metal tube on top of the cartridge valve -- off the faucet by turning it counterclockwise and then pulling it off.

  Turn the sleeve upside down and shake it so the spacer inside falls out. If necessary, insert a screwdriver or your fingers into the cover and pry the spacer out.
