DIY Draft Guard for the Front Door

When the cold weather comes around, cold air from outside can seep or leak into your house from the front door. Newer, properly sealed doors are typically airtight and cold drafts are less of an issue. But if your house has an older, poorly insulated door, cold air might enter the house from the bottom of the door and lower the interior temperature, resulting in a less comfortable home and higher heating costs. You can always apply weatherstrip or buy a door draft guard, but rather than spend money, get creative and make your own door draft guard.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your front door with a measuring tape.

    • 2

Obtain some sort of cloth material with measurements that are at least the width of your front door (usually about 42 inches). Purchase fabric from a fabric shop or use an old towel.

    • 3

Cut the fabric with scissors. Maintain a width of about 42 inches and trim the fabric or towel lengthwise to eight inches.

    • 4

Fold the fabric or towel in half lengthwise. Sew, hand stitch or glue the top opening of the fabric and one side opening. Leave the remaining side open.

    • 5

Stuff the fabric with dry beans or rice by way of the remaining opening. Stitch or glue the opening shut after filling the draft guard.

    • 6

Position the draft guard up against the bottom of the front door to block cold air from entering the home.
