How to Build a Wooden Roof Rake

Keeping your roof free of excess snow is an important part of home maintenance during the winter months. Too much snow can lead to ice jams in your gutters and can cause water to back up into your home and possibly cause structural damage. You can help to prevent this damage by manually removing the snow from your roof with an inexpensive roof rake. You can make a wooden roof rake with a few basic parts and tools.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 angle brackets
  • Wooden pole, 1-1/2-inch diameter, 12 to 20 feet long
  • 2, 3/4 x 2-inch bolts with nuts
  • 2, 3/4 x 1/2-inch bolts with nuts
  • Felt tip marker
  • Piece of wood, 3 feet by 1 foot
  • Drill with 1/2-inch bit
  • Adjustable wrench

      Align the angle brackets so that they are flush with the top of the pole, so it resembles a T. Mark the locations of the bracket screw holes along the pole with your felt tip marker. Remove the brackets. Drill holes that correspond with the screw holes, straight through the poles. Place the angle brackets back in position. Use your 3/4 x 2-inch bolts to secure the brackets to the pole.

      Place the top surface of the angle brackets against your sheet of wood so that it is centered and approximately 1 inch down from the top edge of the wooden sheet. Mark the location of the screw holes and remove the brackets.

      Drill corresponding holes in the wood. Place the brackets against the wood and use your 3/4 x 1/2-inch bolts to secure the wooden surface to the brackets.
