Prop the heavy door open with a suitable doorstop and have an assistant hold it in position while you access the closer using a stepladder. You risk serious injury if the door is allowed to close while you are working on the mechanism.
Find the pair of bolts on the left side of the closer. The one at the top controls the speed of the door from its fully opened position to roughly 10 degrees from closed; the lower bolt controls the latching speed, roughly 10 degrees to its closed position.
Turn either or both of the bolts to adjust the speed. Spinning the bolt clockwise makes the door move faster, while counterclockwise makes the door close slower and more gently. Test the adjustment by removing the doorstop and allowing the door to close.
Make any additional adjustments based on the results of the test. You might need to further increase or decrease the speed of the closer. It should take between four and six seconds for the door to safely close.
