How to Replace a Flat Roof Vent Cap

A flat roof needs proper venting just as a gabled roof does. The vent caps used on flat roofs are often small, metal vents with short flues. If the vent caps on your home’s flat roof are old or damaged, the attic space might not be properly airing out, causing mold or mildew growth. Replacing old roof vent caps with new ones allows air movement inside your attic and thus a healthier living space below.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto the roof via a ladder. Use caution when walking on a roof.

    • 2

Locate the roof vent cap and pry up the shingles around it. Slip the pry bar under the vent cap’s bottom and pry it up gently to remove it from the roof.

    • 3

Place the roofing adhesive onto the underside of the new vent cap and fit it over the roof vent.

    • 4

Arrange the shingles around the base of the vent cap to cover it completely. Nail the shingles in place with the hammer.
