How to Remove a Sink Plumbing Vent

A sink plumbing vent is a small, vented piece of pipe that allows air into the drain lines to accommodate for the loss of pressure when the drain is operated. This air vent attaches to the piping using a simple fitting called a T-fitting. This T-shaped part usually is cut out of the piping when the vent is removed. However, the removal process might vary depending on how your vent is installed. It should only take about two hours to complete this task.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear away all objects and obstructions around the drain and the vent. Find the ends of the T-fitting that connect the vent to your plumbing. Mark them with a marker.

    • 2

Cut through the drain pipe at the marks with a hacksaw, being careful only to cut through the pipe and not the surrounding materials or cabinets. Take the drain vent out of the piping once the cut is complete.

    • 3

Install two coupling fittings on the ends of the pipes where the vent previously was installed. Measure the distance between the two fittings with a tape measure. Cut another length of pipe to fit between the two fittings.

    • 4

Dry-fit the pipe in place. If it does not fit, measure and cut another length. Take the fittings and pipe apart after the fit is perfect. Coat all fittings and pipe with PVC cement and re-install. Let the repair dry.
