The Installation of an Onyx Collection Shower Pan

An Onyx collection shower pan installs on your bathroom floor directly on the subflooring. The install requires some basic tools, and in some cases, depending on how strong and stable the floor is, you have to prepare the floor with another layer of mortar. In most new homes, this will not be the case, but older homes with deteriorating flooring will need added strength to support the shower base. Installation times range between six hours and a full day or more.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the floor to ensure it is flat, stable and without sags or gaps. Replace worn-out flooring with new flooring plywood by pulling up the old floor with a crowbar and nailing new flooring to the floor joists with nails and a hammer. Make sure the nail heads are sunk below the level of the floor; use a nail punch if necessary. Check the floor with a level to make sure it is completely flat. For older floors, or unlevel surfaces, mix a batch of thinset mortar, spread it in a thin, 1-inch layer over the floor with a trowel and let it dry for up to 24 hours.

Run silicone caulking around the bottom of the drain's flange. Put the drain into the drain opening in the Onyx shower base and tighten the locking nut on the base of the drain pipe under the base with pliers.

Apply adhesive caulking to the bottom of your shower base. Place the shower base in the showering area. Align it so there is a 1/8-inch gap between the base walls and the framing studs on all sides. Install wood strips on any studs where there is a larger gap, with screws and a screwdriver. Countersink the screws.
