How Does an Electric Floor Scraper Work?

When it’s time to redo a floor or get rid of big messes, an electric floor scraper can make a big job easier. A traditional man-powered floor scraper works well for smaller jobs, but bigger projects require more power. There are several electric floor scraper types. Choosing the right one for your project decreases your workload.
  1. Identification

    • An electric floor scraper uses adjustable blades to remove an entire floor surface, or remove debris or adhesive from the floor. Electricity powers the machine’s driveshaft, which pushes the blades into the floor stripping away the floor or sticky messes.

    Types

    • Electric floor scrapers come in several varieties suited for large and small jobs. Larger jobs, such as complete floor remodels, require larger machines such as ride-on models. These models have a seat on top letting the user maneuver the machine to the desired location. Ride-on machines are the most expensive electric scrapers type and require the most expertise and maintenance. Walk-behind electric scrapers resemble large lawn mowers. The user walks behind the machine and pushes it across the floor’s surface. This type electric scraper doesn’t have the same voltage as some of the ride-on, larger models, but it works well for smaller jobs.

    Benefits

    • Floor scrapers powered by electricity don’t require fuel, as do their propane counterparts. Some cordless models use batteries and need charging before use. The immediate availability of electric models is a draw for many customers who choose this type of floor scraper. Because it’s electric, it’s quieter than other models. Floor scrapers have several blade options that are changed depending on the job. Big jobs, such as like removing carpet, ceramic tile and linoleum, require 6- to 16-inch blades.

    Alternatives

    • The cord that brings power to the electric floor scraper is also a drawback. Having a cord following behind the machine is dangerous or cumbersome. A propane machine simply requires fuel purchased at a gas station or other propane fueling station. Cordless models feature the best of both choices. They must be charged. The battery holds the charge and lets the machine run cordless for a specified period, depending on the model. Some models come with more than one battery for longer use periods.
