How to Move a Shower Drain in Concrete Foundation

Moving a shower drain in your concrete foundation requires the use of heavy-duty equipment. The shower drain and the drainage pipe are located beneath the concrete slab, so you have to bust through the slab with a jackhammer just to get to your pipe. Once you access the pipe, the rest of the project is similar to routing pipe above the foundation. You need masonry skills to cover up the pipe after it is moved.

  • Spray paint
  • PVC drain pipe

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drain grate and unscrew the drain flange with a screwdriver. Cut around the drain with the jackhammer and remove the concrete holding the drain in place. Lift out the drain and cut it from the drainage pipe with a pipe saw.

    • 2

Mark a new route for the drainpipe leading to the new shower installation using spray paint. Cut along this route with the jackhammer, making a channel for the new drain line. Cut a 3-inch hole in the concrete for the new shower drain basket at the new installation point.

Connect the new drainpipe to the old drain line with a coupling and run the new line to the new shower drain. Install an elbow joint on the end of the drain line and dry-fit the joint to the new shower drain. Take all the pipes and fittings apart and reassemble them after coating each with PVC primer and adhesive.

Fill the drainage channel with gravel and apply fresh concrete over the top. Spread the concrete across the entire pipe channel with a trowel. Pat down the surface to flatten and smooth it over, with a flat tamping tool. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
