How to Bend Wood to Make a Steamer

Steamers are boxes used to expose wood to steam at high temperatures. The effects of hot steam exposure allow wood to be bent and retain its new shape for the purpose of furniture production and other woodworking projects. If you don't have a steamer box but would like to build one, you might need to bend wood to create it. Steaming isn't the only way to bend wood, so you can prepare wood for your own steamer box through alternative methods.

Things You'll Need

  • Large pot or boiling-friendly container

Instructions

    • 1

Boil water in a large enough pot or container to accommodate your wood pieces using a hot plate or oven.

    • 2

Dip the wood into the container and let it sit for 30 minutes. Pull it out using protective gloves to prevent yourself from getting burned.

    • 3

Place the wood into a vise or a set of clamps to hold it into a bent position while the wood dries. Wait for the wood to fully dry before taking the clamps off. It may take several hours for the wood to be ready, especially if you live in a humid climate. Cut it as needed to fit your steamer box.
