How to Troubleshoot a Peerless Saw

Peerless has been making various types of saws since 1931. The models vary from handsaws to automatic versions designed for industrial use. While each of these models varies in its fundamental function somewhat, there are still some basic things to check if your saw starts malfunctioning. Troubleshooting a Peerless saw helps you save money on professional replacement or repair and gets you and your saw back to work faster.

Verify that the saw is getting power, if it is an electric model. Ensure it is plugged in and that the plug itself is getting power. The problem could be with the outlet and not the saw.

    • 2

Inspect the power cable for signs of damage such as tears or sharp bends. This increases the likelihood of a short, and the cable may need replacement. If the saw is plugged into an extension cord, switch the cord to see if the saw starts working. Any breaks in the cord need to be wrapped in electrical tape to prevent sparks or injury.

Unplug the saw and examine the saw blade. A dull blade doesn't cut as effectively as a sharp one does. Switch the blade and verify on the package that the blade is designed for what you're using it for. Saws typically use different blades to cut metal than they do to cut wood, for example. Verify that the blade is on correctly as well, because blades are often designed to work in one direction. If your blade is on backwards, the saw won't function correctly.

Adjust the band tension on the saw in accordance with your operating manual, if the saw is starting but not running properly. The method for this varies depending on the type and model of saw, so only attempt this yourself if you have the manual handy.

Use a different cutting oil if your saw is overheating or dulling at a quick pace. Verify that the oil you have is recommended for that type of saw. If you're not sure, call Peerless at 800-973-3753 and ask. Slow the speed of the saw as well; higher speeds result in more blade wear and heating problems, especially when cutting a dense material like wood.

Have the saw professionally examined, if it is still not working to get it repaired safely.
