How to Brace & Install a Kohler Arcylic Bathtub

Kohler arcylic bathtubs install inside your bathing alcove with the help of a few common tools and, in some cases, a mortar bed. The bathtub sits right up against the stud framing, which provides the support for the tub. The flooring also supports the bottom of the tub, so it has to be strong and flat to do its job. If your floor is weak, rip up the old floorboards and install new ones before you begin this installation. You need a solid floor to properly support any new tub.

Things You'll Need

  • Overflow tube
  • Bath tub drain pipe
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Shims
  • Screws
  • Thinset mortar and trowel (for some installations)
  • PVC cement
  • Pilot drill bit
  • Drill
  • Furring strips

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the overflow tub to the overflow outlet on the tub by pressing the end of the tube into the outlet and screwing the face plate to the tube with the provided hardware and a screwdriver. Connect the drain pipe to the tub drain hole and route the drain pipe to the overflow tube with the provided t-fitting.

Set the entire tub into the bathroom alcove. Check the tub to see if it is level by setting a carpenter's level on each side of the tub. If it is not level, screw shims to the floor in areas falling below the level marking. If you cannot level the tub, install a thin 1-inch layer of thinset cement over the floor with a hand trowel and then install the tub. If you do not use thinset mortar, apply adhesive to the bottom of the tub, after it is level, and set it back into the alcove.

    • 3

Insert the tub's drain pipe into the home drain pipe using PVC cement on each pipe where the two connect.

Drill a pilot hole through the flange of the tub and into the stud frames with a drill and pilot drill bit. Screw the flange to the studs with screws and a screwdriver to mount the tub in place. If necessary, mount a furring strip to the wall frames with screws and a screwdriver to fill up any gaps between the studs and the flange and to brace the side of the tub.
