Should I Install Insulation Behind My Shower?

Insulation is necessary to keep your home energy-efficient. Properly insulated homes use less energy and maintain a comfortable temperature better than homes without insulation. When installing insulation behind your shower, it is necessary to have a vapor barrier in place. Controlling moisture is key to preventing damage associated with excess moisture.

    • Insulation helps your home become resistant to heat flow, which is essential to lower energy bills. Heat moves through the ceiling, walls and floors inside your home. Installing insulation with the appropriate R-value can reduce heat transfer.

    Types

    • Fiberglass insulation is often used to insulate interior walls in residential homes. This type of insulation comes in batts and rolls, and is placed in walls before drywall is installed. Foam board insulation is another type of insulation commonly used in homes, and is made from polyurethane or polystyrene. This insulation is placed in ceilings, floors, unfinished walls and foundation walls. Spray foam insulation may be used to insulated existing walls and attics. This insulation is made with phenolic, cementitious or polyurethane foam and is sprayed or foamed into place.

    Installation

    • Insulation should be installed in the wall behind your shower before drywall and tile are installed, and should be fitted in between joists, studs and beams. Since bathrooms have frequent moisture, it is important to place sheets of 4- or 6-mil plastic over the insulation, stapling it to the ceiling or wall framing. This will keep moisture from damaging your insulation and causing mold growth.

    Consideration

    • After adding your insulation to your bathroom, take a few additional steps to reduce moisture. Installing an exhaust fan will remove excess moisture from the air inside your bathroom and keep humidity levels low. This will increase the efficiency of your insulation and lessen the chances of moisture damage. If you do not have an exhaust fan, open a window when showering or bathing to reduce moisture levels.
