How to Insulate the Top of a Sliding Glass Window

When the winter weather comes around, it may seem as though every crack in the house is bringing in a draft. Reduce your heating costs and increase your comfort this coming winter by sealing the tops of your sliding windows. Windows that slide from side to side need weatherproofing like any other other window in your home, and a properly applied amount of weatherstripping can help reduce the chill. Only apply weather stripping in temperatures that are above 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the window to one side so that it is completely open.

    • 2

Clean the track using soap and water and allow it to dry.

    • 3

Measure the amount of exposed track using a measuring tape.

    • 4

Cut a piece of weatherstripping that matches the measurement you found in Step 3.

    • 5

Peel the protective backing off the weatherstripping, exposing the adhesive.

    • 6

Press the adhesive side of the weatherstripping firmly into the track. The window will slide easily over the weatherstripping, sealing the gap when it is closed.

    • 7

Repeat this process for the other window if it slides as well.
