How to Prevent an Air Conditioner From Turning Off After a Power Glitch

Air conditioners are more than a convenience. They protect against heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. However, air conditioners can shut down during power disturbances caused by storms and brownouts. Some cities may even shut down power briefly to various city blocks in an attempt to conserve energy. A glitch may be unavoidable, but the air conditioner could keep working if it is hooked up to an alternative source of power.

Instructions

    • 1

Move a generator capable of powering an air conditioner into your home. A generator capable of 5,000 watts at start up should be able to handle an air conditioner.

    • 2

Fill the generator with fuel. Follow all instructions for that specific generator. Some rely on gasoline while others are propane-powered.

    • 3

Unplug the air conditioning unit from the wall and plug it into the generator during times of brownouts and power problems. Use an extension cord if necessary, but if possible plug the air conditioner directly into the generator. Turn the AC on after it is plugged into the generator and the generator is running.

    • 4

Turn off the AC and the generator to refill the fuel as needed to keep the air conditioner running.
