How to Get Intercoms to Work on Different Floors

Intercoms are basically radios that utilize a frequency system to allow users to speak to each other in different areas of a building, including on different floors. Each intercom has an antenna to allow it to catch the frequency. If you are unable to hear all users through their intercoms there is either a problem with how the units are set up, there is no power to one or more of the units, or there is too much interference.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the power is on, and the "Mute" button on each intercom is not in the "On" position.

    • 2

Press the "All Call" button, or a similar option, to communicate with all of the intercoms on different floors

    • 3

Switch the frequency on all units to the same channel. If any unit within the intercom system is on a different frequency, the intercoms will not work on different floors.

    • 4

Verify the intercom console transformer is plugged into a power outlet, and any units that operate with battery power have fresh batteries.

    • 5

Move all intercom units away from metal objects, fluorescent light sources, computers, electric motors and light dimmer switches. All of these things will interrupt the signal. Move the doorbell unit away from an A/C line.

    • 6

Program the same code in all intercoms on separate floors, if you want them to be able to interact with each other. The steps to change the code vary per intercom system, but often the intercoms must be placed in "Program" mode first, then the "Talk" button is pressed a specific number of times to indicate the new code.

    • 7

Move the units around between floors to get better reception. Keep the units away from metal objects and any other interference, and allow at least 6 feet between each unit.
