How to Seal a Corrugated Tin Bathtub

A bathtub made of corrugated tin adds country character to a bathroom. Antique tubs often were made of tin to cut down on costs or to reuse old tin from around the farm. The bathtub also can be custom made to fit into your bathroom space as well as made as deep as you like. It's important, though, to seal the tub so that water doesn't leak out of it and onto your floors, and subsequently into the framing underneath. Consider tiling or sealing the floor and wall near the tub too, to prevent water damage from splashing.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tub well before sealing it. Rusty spots should be sanded down. Wipe the tub out well so that the surface is dry and free of debris before sealing.

    • 2

Place a tube of silicone caulk in a caulk gun with the tip pointing away from you. Cut off the tip at a 45-degree angle with a utility knife.

    • 3

Squeeze the gun trigger to get the sealant flowing to the tip of the tube.

    • 4

Place the tip of the caulk tube at the first seam that requires sealing and firmly, but gently squeeze the trigger while moving your hand along the seam.

    • 5

Continue sealing each seam. If necessary, push the sealant into larger gaps using a paintbrush, such as under the lip of the tub. It's beneficial to seal under the lip of the tub, if there is one, to prevent rusting.
