Conversion Methods for a GE Propane Stove

A gas conversion allows heating units, such as dryers and stoves, to use an alternative type of gas. GE sells propane stoves that can be converted to natural gas and vice versa if you decide to change the fuel source. The conversion process is designed to be simple and cost-effective. With the right tools and safety procedures you should be able to convert your stove yourself.
  1. Conversion

    • Converting from propane to natural gas typically occurs when natural gas lines become available in a neighborhood. Propane is the standard alternative for areas that do not have access to natural gas; but as gas lines expand, you may be able to choose between the two. Since natural gas is less expensive than propane, it makes sense to spend some money converting your stove and save money in the long run.

    Type of GE Stove

    • Your first step in the conversion process is to check your GE stove for conversion compatibility. Your stove's manual or model number panel should indicate if it is designed to handle both propane and natural gas. If you have an older model, it may be limited to one type of fuel. If this is the case, the conversion process will be both simple and costly: buy a new stove. But most modern stoves are designed to accept both fuels.

    Adapter Kit

    • Once you know that your GE stove can handle natural gas or propane, the next step is to buy an adapter kit. These kits have attachments you can use to convert between propane and natural gas and typically cost between $10 and $20. Buy a GE conversion kit for your stove model, not a generic kit. The right attachments are key to connect the stove to the new gas line. If you have switched fuel sources before, the old attachments are probably still stored in the back of your stove, and you do not even need a kit.

    Using the Kit

    • Turn off all power and gas to the stove before beginning the conversion. Move the stove away from the wall to access the natural gas line. Attach the new connector line, by following the installation instructions precisely. You may also need to replace each range orifice for the individual burners with a new connector, which should be included in the adapter kit.
