Clean the existing stair flooring or subflooring thoroughly with a sponge, warm water and several drops of dish soap to remove any dirt, dust or grease from them. Dry them with a towel so water doesn't seep into the stairs.
Measure the width and height of each stair using a tape measure. Saw the Pergo panels with a carbide blade on a table saw so they match the appropriate sizes. The riser for the bottom stair needs to have a quarter-inch space between it and a Pergo floor to allow for expansion once it's installed. This prevents the laminate from warping or buckling.
Glue the riser piece in place on the stair using construction adhesive. Attach #6 finishing screws that are over an inch long to the edges, by drilling them into the panel.
Attach the tread and the stair nosing with construction adhesive and hold it in place for a few seconds so the adhesive starts bonding to the stair. Drill one #6 finishing screw into each side of the nosing. Drill additional screws no more than 8 inches apart from each other across the nosing and at the base of the tread where it meets the riser.
Use the same construction adhesive to attach the shim to the underside of the nosing, then attach two more #6 screws at the edges to hold it in place.
