Can a Misplaced Shower Drain Cause Foundation Problems?

Foundation moisture is a common problem in many homes. When moisture from a misplaced or improperly installed shower drain seeps into the foundation of your home, it can damage its structure and cause mold to grow. To avoid complications, you must locate the cause of the leak and repair it as soon as possible.
  1. Causes

    • The plumbing in your home can cause moisture problems inside your home, as well as in its foundation. Shower drains that are not installed in the correct place or that are incorrectly installed may cause water to leak into the foundation of your home and cause damage. If your home does not have adequate foundation drainage, water can back up inside your home. According to Oregon State University, when indoor water problems occur, improper foundation drainage is the most likely cause.

    Effects

    • Water leaking down into the foundation of your home can cause mold to grow. Mold spores can begin to grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours after moisture is introduced. Many people have serious health problems after being exposed to mold, such as congestion, sneezing, wheezing and difficulty breathing. Mold also causes the material it is growing on to deteriorate, making it necessary to repair wood or drywall.

    Interior Solutions

    • If you suspect your shower drain is misplaced or installed improperly, hire a plumber to repair it. Once the leak is repaired, inspect your home for signs of mold growth and structural damage. If mold is visible, remove it by scrubbing it with a hard brush and liquid dish detergent. After removing mold, rinse with water and dry thoroughly. If you have large areas of mold growth resulting from a water leak, do not attempt to remove it. Hire a mold removal specialist if any areas of mold are larger that 25 square feet.

    Outdoor Solutions

    • Inspect the foundation of your home for signs of water damage. Search for cracks in the foundation that can allow water to seep inside your home. Install a perimeter drainage system if water leaks are a common problem. Examine your downspouts and gutters for any material or debris that can cause water to back-up and leak inside.
