Unlock the front cabinet of the clock with the key and open it to locate the chimes inside a cardboard sleeve.
Pull down on two cardboard tabs on the outside of the sleeve to release the chimes. One tab is at the front of the cardboard, while the second is closer to the bottom.
Remove the side access panel on the clock and pull out the sponge buffers located on the chime hammers. Do not remove the foam blocks from the clock until it has been in operation for eight hours or more and the blocks are loosened. Otherwise, you risk damaging the cables on the clock. All other packing materials in and around the clock require removal right away for the clock to work. This frees up room for the chimes to operate.
Inspect the top of the chimes. They come already attached to the top of the clock, but if one is loose, reattach it. They typically hang off of hooks at the top of the clock casing. They still need weights to operate.
Connect the weights to the pulleys for the chimes to start working. Look at the bottom of each weight. The weight marked "L" slides onto a small hook on the left pulley. The "C" weight goes onto the center pulley, while the "R" weight goes on the right pulley. Connecting these correctly not only ensures the chimes function properly but also that the clock keeps the correct time.
