How to Connect the Chimes on Howard Miller Grandfather Clocks

Howard Miller is a well-known brand of grandfather clocks. Its namesake started the company in 1926 at the age of 21, and the company has been focused on grandfather clocks since the 1960s. Howard Miller clocks require assembly once they arrive because the company ships them all over the world and the individual pieces need protecting during the shipping process. Connecting the chimes on Howard Miller clocks to the weights can be done in seconds once everything is unpacked.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock the front cabinet of the clock with the key and open it to locate the chimes inside a cardboard sleeve.

    • 2

Pull down on two cardboard tabs on the outside of the sleeve to release the chimes. One tab is at the front of the cardboard, while the second is closer to the bottom.

    • 3

Remove the side access panel on the clock and pull out the sponge buffers located on the chime hammers. Do not remove the foam blocks from the clock until it has been in operation for eight hours or more and the blocks are loosened. Otherwise, you risk damaging the cables on the clock. All other packing materials in and around the clock require removal right away for the clock to work. This frees up room for the chimes to operate.

    • 4

Inspect the top of the chimes. They come already attached to the top of the clock, but if one is loose, reattach it. They typically hang off of hooks at the top of the clock casing. They still need weights to operate.

Connect the weights to the pulleys for the chimes to start working. Look at the bottom of each weight. The weight marked "L" slides onto a small hook on the left pulley. The "C" weight goes onto the center pulley, while the "R" weight goes on the right pulley. Connecting these correctly not only ensures the chimes function properly but also that the clock keeps the correct time.
