Septic Line Cleaning with a Ridgid/Kollmann Drum Drain Machine

Septic tank drain lines often get clogged and need to be cleaned, which can be a difficult and messy task to accomplish. Chemical and liquid cleaners are available that can be sent down into the septic drain line to help clear up clogs and clean the lines, but sometimes a drum drain machine, such as the Ridgid/Kollmann machine, will be necessary to get the septic tank drain lines cleared out. Note that only adults familiar with the septic system and power tools should operate the drain machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Ridgid/Kollmann drain machine approximately 1 or 2 feet away from the sewer tank inlet.

    • 2

Snap together the desired cleaning tool attachment to the end of the couple cable, depending upon the size of the line that is to be cleaned. Select the 3/8-inch cable for lines 2 inches in size or smaller or the ½-inch cable for lines that are 2 to 4 inches in size.

    • 3

Pull on the drum cable to extend the cable and tool and place the tool inside the sewer inlet. Plug in the power cord for the drain machine into a grounded outlet and turn the main power switch to “FOR”.

    • 4

Hold the cable with two hands and pull another foot of cable out of the drum, creating a small loop of the cable that hangs between the drum machine and the inlet.

    • 5

Push the cable into the sewer inlet with two hands and step on the foot actuator to turn on the drain machine. Note that the cable will start to rotate down into the sewer inlet. Press gently down on the cable to help move the cable and the tool down into the line.

    • 6

Continue to gently feed cable down into the inlet as the tool moves into the sewer line. Let the tool work through the drain obstruction, which will be evident when the cable begins to twist sideways and resistance is felt.

    • 7

Start to flush the line with water to help clear debris from the line while continuing to run the drain machine.

    • 8

Keep pressing on the foot actuator while pulling gently up on 1 or 2 feet of cable when the drain is cleared. Repeat until the tool is visible inside the top of the sewer inlet. Continue to flush the line with water while pulling the cable and tool up to help clean both items.

    • 9

Remove your foot from the foot actuator and wait for the drain machine to stop completely, and then turn the main power switch to “OFF” before pulling the tool and cable from the sewer line.
