A Slow Leak at the Top of a Culligan Estate 2 Water Softener

Culligan water softeners run your water supply through a column of resins to filter out minerals, then the minerals are flushed out to a drain. The ion column is then soaked in a brine solution to clean it. It's then rinsed and the process starts all over again. Culligan water softeners such as the Estate 2 are mostly self-sustaining aside from some basic maintenance, but if they start leaking from the top, immediate troubleshooting is required to fix the problem and prevent damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any objects sitting on top of the water softener. It's not a shelf and Culligan warns against storing items on top of the appliance. Excessive weight can lead to leaks.

    • 2

Examine the hoses leading into the water softener. Tighten any loose connections with a wrench and replace any torn hoses. Wrap duct tape around the hose for a temporary fix if you can't replace the hose immediately.

    • 3

Examine the pipes above the water softener. If your pipes are leaking, they may drip down on the device, meaning the water softener isn't the actual source of the leak.

    • 4

Check the top of the tank for cracks in the surface. Replace the tank if it's cracked. The crack is likely to get worse over time and could become a hazard.

    • 5

Replace the O-rings in the valves if the valves themselves are leaking. Turn the water supply off, unscrew the valve with a wrench, then pop off the old O-ring and push in the replacement.
