How to Prevent Roofing Membrane Slippage

Roofing membranes protect roofs against moisture penetration. They normally consist of strong fabric, such as felt or polyester, treated with waterproof materials such as asphalt or polyvinyl chloride. Roofing membranes are especially common on flatter roofs, which have a higher risk of water buildup. There is a risk of a roofing membrane slipping out of position after it is applied to a roof; preventing this helps protect your roof more effectively.

Inspect your roof regularly to look for signs of moisture infiltration of the membrane. A common source of slipping is moisture getting under the top layer of the membrane and causing it to blister or slide. Seal any breaks in the membrane as soon as they are discovered. Follow the sealing instructions for your specific membrane, because the procedure varies depending on what your membrane is made of.

    • 2

Walk on the roof slowly and carefully when you inspect it to prevent your feet from sliding on the membrane. This is not only important for your own safety to prevent falls, it also prevents your weight from shifting the membrane.

    • 3

Sweep off any snow buildup with a broom or a shovel after a snowfall to prevent the snow from seeping into the membrane and causing slippage.

    • 4

Clear the gutters and drains on the roof regularly to further prevent water buildup on the roof that causes membrane slipping. Clear gutters help the roof drain faster and more efficiently.
