How to Clean the Ignition Electrodes on a Honeywell Oil Furnace

Electrodes are found in the ignition network of oil furnaces including Honeywell models. As an oil furnace runs, it produces soot that invades the working parts of the appliance. Cleaning these two small points removes soot buildup to improve the function of the igniter. This should be part of an annual maintenance plan to keep your oil furnace in operation. Wiping down the electrodes takes just minutes when you are performing a yearly inspection of your Honeywell unit.

Flip the system shut down switch to the off position. In most cases, you will find the emergency shut down switch near the unit. It will have a red or bright-colored cover. This switch cuts off both the electrical power and fuel supply to your oil furnace.

Unscrew the front cover on the furnace to access the oil burner, so you can locate the electrodes. The burner sits at the bottom of the unit. You will see the electrodes near the nozzle, or long spout that sits to one side of the appliance.

    • 3

Wipe down the nose and stems of the electrodes with a cloth. Dab a small amount of cleaning solution on the cloth and wipe the tips of the electrode. You can purchase the cleaning solvent at home improvement or hardware store.

Reassemble the furnace once the cleaning solution evaporates.
