A MIG welder uses an inert gas, usually Argon (Ar) to protect the weld puddle, which means that there is no additional gas reaction during the welding process. In addition, there is metal in the argon gas, which contributes to the “MIG” acronym for “metal in gas.” The MIG welder uses an electrical current to heat the base metal on the welder, which causes the MIG wires to arc together. The user attaches the lead on the end of the welder to the item to be welded when the electrical current is running through the welder.
The Craftsman MIG welder has a circuit amp rating of 15 with an electric rating of 120 volts AC. The welder can be connected to most standard 120V outlets and has 0.024- and 0.030-inch solid core wire or a 0.030 flux core wire, which can be used in 4- to 8-inch spools.
A gas tank and the shielding gas do not come included with the Craftsman MIG welder. The welder comes with a face shield and has a torch length of 8 feet, however. The welder can weld a thin 24-guage sheet metal up to a 3/16-inch steel item. The set comes with five -0.023 contact tips, five -0.030 contact tips, five 0.040 contact tips and a wire spool.
Craftsman offers a three-year full warranty for all parts except the gun and cables. A one-year warranty is offered for the cables and guns. Sears may also offer additional service protection packages with the welder if purchased through a Sears store, contact the store for more information.
