Do Shrink Wrap Window Kits Work on Cement Basement Windows?

Shrink wrap window kits help insulate windows to keep warmth in and lower energy bills. The kits are available in many home improvement and general merchandise stores. The kit contains double-sided tape and plastic to cover windows. The plastic is shrink-wrapped and sealed using a blow dryer. Although double-sided tape can stick on many types of windows, whether the shrink wrap window kit will work on cement basement windows depends on the humidity level of the basement.
  1. Kit

    • The double-sided tape in shrink wrap window kits is suitable for standard wood or plastic window frames. The small tape may fall off surfaces such as cement, however. Shrink wrap window kits contain alcohol pads to remove any moisture and dirt from the window frames to be taped and shrink wrapped. Alcohol will essentially dry the areas before applying the tape, but the use of the small pads still may not enable you to apply the tape successfully to cement.

    Basement Conditions

    • The temperature and humidity of the basement can affect the adhesive’s ability to stick on any surface, including concrete and cement. Finished and unfinished basements are typically damper than other areas of the house for a number of reasons. The lack of air circulation and moisture from the soil surrounding the basement increase the humidity. Moisture can enter the basement from capillary suction through concrete walls, according to the University of Minnesota.

    Solution

    • Purchase larger, double-sided tape specifically used to hang fixtures in humid environments such as the shower. Some industrial double-sided tape brands are specifically made for cement and concrete. These types of double-sided tape are available at craft and home improvement stores.

    Preparation and Application

    • Clean the cement around the window using a solution of hot water and white vinegar. If the concrete isn’t painted, use a scrub brush to clean the area. If the concrete is painted, use a cotton rag. Allow the surface to dry completely. Tape will adhere better to a clean, dry surface. Use a space heater to dry the window frame. Apply the double-sided tape to the sides, top and bottom of the basement window frame. Measure and cut the plastic to cover the double-sided tape around the window frame. Use a blow dryer to shrink the plastic tight.
