Flexible Materials That Will Bond to PVC

PVC Applications

• All PVC applications require using specific primers, cements, adhesives and other flexible materials made specifically for polyvinyl chloride for best results. Some products are available that work on PVC and metal, wood, aluminum and other types of plastic materials such as CPVC, ABS and PEX. PVC manufacturers often suggest the best product to use for PVC application.

Pipes

• PVC pipes are used for applications such as water distribution systems, sewer systems and vents in the home. Bonding pipes requires using PVC primer and PVC solvent cement. Proper bonding, referred to as PVC welding, using these flexible materials will create a bond as strong as welded metal pipes.

Threaded Fittings

• Some PVC pipes are connected to threaded fittings. Threaded fittings include spigots, sockets and couplings used for a variety of applications. Some of the fittings reduce or enlarge PVC pipe connections. Threaded fittings use Teflon tape to secure them. The Plastic Pipe and Fitting Association recommends Teflon tape that is 3 millimeters thick.

Sheeting

• PVC sheeting is used for applications such as siding, roofing, framing and other indoor and outdoor construction. PVC sheeting comes in a variety of types and sizes, and some sheeting material is flexible. To bond sheet edges, PVC cement solvent must be used. Bonding PVC to other materials such as wood, other types of plastics and metal requires using a synthetic rubber-based adhesive. Flexible PVC sheets require plasticizer-resistant type adhesives.
