How to Get Creases Out of Brass Lamps

Brass lamps add timeless, classic appeal and rich color to a room. Over time, a brass lamp can take on a creased appearance due to misuse, improper storage or tarnish. Since a brass lamp is an investment in home decor style, you can fix the lamp instead of throwing it away. With the use of proper tools and supplies, you can get out creases in your brass lamps and return them to their previous appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove large creases first. Hold the flat side of the burnishing tool at a 45-degree angle to the surface of the creased brass lamp.

    • 2

Smooth the burnishing tool over the crease, moving it in one direction across the brass. Repeat this process until all of the large creases have been smoothed out.

    • 3

Pour 8 ounces of warm water into a bucket. Add 1 tablespoon of ammonia.

    • 4

Moisten a clean cloth with the diluted ammonia solution. Wipe off the brass lamp surface to clean it. Dry the surface with another cloth.

Vinegar serves as a natural tarnish remover.

Tackle the appearance of small creases with a homemade tarnish removal paste. Fill a small bowl with 1 teaspoon each of table salt, white vinegar and flour. Stir the three ingredients to create a thick paste.

    • 6

Dip a soft, dry cloth in the vinegar paste. Rub it onto the surface of your brass lamp to remove tarnish and small creases. Wipe the paste off with a dry cloth.

    • 7

Dampen a clean cloth with a quarter-sized amount of mineral oil. Buff the brass lamp surface with the oil to give it shine. Remove excess oil with another cloth.
