How to Hang Drywall Over a Shower Pan With a Flange

Your shower pan has a flange that sticks up from the edge of the pan. This flange is just a small lip that runs around the outside of the base, and it is called a water dam. It is supposed to stop water from slipping through the seam between the surrounding drywall and the shower pan. After you level and mount the pan, you have to install the drywall over this flange. It is a very simple task, and all you need to do is cut drywall to fit over the flange.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Water-resistant drywall
  • Drywall ruler
  • Razor
  • Drywall screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Mesh tape
  • Fiberglass drywall tape
  • Drywall joint compound
  • Quick-set compound
  • Scraper

Instructions

    • 1

Level and mount the shower pan by driving screws through flange and into the wall framing using the screws provided with your shower pan.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the shower pan edge, the horizontal part right below the flange, and the top of the shower wall. Transfer this measurement to the drywall. Score and snap the drywall to this measurement with a razor and drywall ruler.

    • 3

Place the drywall sheet on the wall framing so the bottom edge does not touch the flange. Installing a gap between the drywall and the shower pan prevents cracking. Screw the drywall to the wall frames with the drywall screws and a power screwdriver.

    • 4

Repeat the last step, cutting drywall to fit your shower wall frames. After installing drywall on the entire wall, tape all of the drywall seams with fiberglass tape, spread joint compound over the tape with a scraper and let dry until the compound turns white. Cover the gap with quick-set compound and mesh tape.
