How to Fix a Leaking Motor on a Hot Tub

A leaking hot tub motor creates an electrical safety hazard in your home. Thus, it is imperative that you remedy the situation as soon as you notice it. Your hot tub motor powers the pump that allows water to flow through the hot tub enclosure. Rubber seals within the motor, known as “o-rings,” prevent water from leaking out of the motor as it powers the pump. Over time, the o-rings in your hot tub can wear out and stop working properly. A leaking hot tub motor is a sign that your hot tub's o-rings need to be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the hot tub. Turn off the breaker that directs power to both the hot tub's motor and its pump.

    • 2

Unclamp and remove the pipes attached to the hot tub pump and motor assembly. Sit the motor and pump on a flat surface. Dry the pump and motor with a clean, lint-free cloth.

    • 3

Unscrew the bolts connecting the pump to the motor with a socket wrench. Pull the pump and motor free from one another.

    • 4

Remove the diffuser cover from the top of the hot tub motor. Depending on the type of hot tub motor you have, the diffuser may be screwed in place or you may be able to twist it off.

    • 5

Pull out the old o-ring located inside of the diffuser cover.

    • 6

Lubricate a new o-ring with water-based lubricant. Affix the new o-ring inside the diffuser cover.

    • 7

Re-attach the diffuser cover to the hot tub motor. Re-attach the hot tub motor to the pump.

    • 8

Return the hot tub motor and pump assembly to its original location. Re-clamp the water pipes leading into the motor and pump assembly.
