How to Brick a Wall in Your House

You can brick any wall of your house with brick veneer, a material just like full-size brick but less than half as thick. Installing brick veneer on a wall is not complicated and can be done in a single weekend. Once the brick is installed, your room will have the urban feel of an apartment in SoHo or a converted warehouse in Brooklyn.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wall with a damp rag and soapy water. Remove any dust or grime. Allow the wall to dry.

    • 2

Apply mastic to the bottom of the wall using a notched trowel. Scrape grooves in the mastic with the notched side of the trowel. Put mastic on the wall to cover four or five bricks in the bottom course of bricks.

    • 3

Place the first brick in the lower left-hand corner of the wall and wiggle it back and forth on the wall just a little to ensure that the hold is a good one.

    • 4

Place the next brick on the row beside the first brick. Leave approximately a half inch of space between the first brick and the second. Place a plastic spacer between the two bricks to keep the spacing even.

    • 5

Apply bricks to the first course until you've covered all the mastic you put on the wall in Step 2, then apply more mastic for the next bricks in the row. Put spacers in between all bricks. Brick up the entire first course.

    • 6

Lay the next course of bricks, a half inch above the first course. Place plastic spacers between the first course and the second course of bricks. Brick the rest of the wall in this way, placing spacers between all the bricks. Wait for the wall to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions, using a mortar mixer drill attachment.

    • 8

Spread mortar into the joints with a trowel and scrape off excess mortar with the edge of the trowel.

    • 9

Press the joints with a dowel rod to make a concave indentation between bricks.

    • 10

Wait for the wall to cure again, then wash off the wall with a stiff bristle brush and soap. This will take off any mortar dust or extra chunks of mortar.
