How to Build a Shower Using Membrane Material

If you need to build a new shower, and are not using a pre-built or pre-formed shower pan, you will use a shower membrane, which is just another name for a waterproof barrier. This membrane is often called a shower pan liner, because it lines the shower and protects the walls from water. Installing a shower with one of these liners requires some masonry skills and lots of work, but it is achievable. Just give yourself at least a full weekend to complete the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Roofing felt
  • Steel mesh
  • Hand stapler
  • Metal shears
  • Razor
  • Drain
  • Wrench
  • Sand mix (regular cement with added sand, available at hardware stores)
  • Regular trowel
  • Shower liner

Instructions

    • 1

Staple roofing felt to the floor where you intend to install the liner membrane, using a hand stapler. Cut an opening in the roofing felt with a razor where the felt covers the drain hole in the floor. Cover the roofing felt with steel mesh and staple this to the floor with the hand stapler. Cut another hole in the steel mesh with metal shears where it covers the drain hole. Place the bottom half of the shower drain in the drain hole in the floor and secure it in the floor with the provided drain bolts and a wrench. The drain comes in two parts, a top half with a flange, and the bottom half that mounts to the floor.

    • 2

Make a batch of sand mix concrete, a mixture of cement and fine sand, and spread this over the steel mesh. Trowel the material into a floor that slopes evenly to the drain hole on all sides, using a regular concrete trowel. Allow a full day of drying time.

    • 3

Lay the membrane over the dried concrete bed. Staple the membrane to the shower wall framing with the stapler and trim off the excess with a razor. Make another batch of sand mix and spread this over the liner.

    • 4

Form the sand mix to create a 1 1/2-inch deep floor that follows the same grade as the concrete beneath the liner, using a hand trowel. Let this dry for a day before walking on or using the shower.
