How to Dog-Proof a Pull-Out Garbage Container

No matter how well you feed your dog, he will still love garbage. They just can't resist the smell of rotten food, wet cardboard or worse -- Its almost out of their control -- they can't help pawing or clawing their way into trash cans. For your dogs own health, he can't be allowed to eat garbage and he won't stop if you allow it. If you have one of those pull-out containers, its simple to keep them out without any major remodeling by securing it with bungee cord.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet door on the pull-out container bin if it has one. Pull the sliding container out as far as it will allow. Remove the trash canister or can.

    • 2

Reach into the cabinet as far as possible and hook a bungee cord onto the framework at the bottom of the cabinet. If you can't find a place to hook it, reach into the cabinet with a cordless drill and 3/4-inch bit. Drill a hole into the side jamb on the left or right, whichever is the easiest to reach.

    • 3

Reach in and hook one end of an 18-inch bungee cord into the hole. Stretch the bungee toward the can and hook it at the bottom of the can onto the bracket or framework that holds the canister.

    • 4

Place the trash canister back into the sliding bracket. Reach over the side of the can and hook a 36-inch bungee cord onto the bottom of the can. Stretch it over the top of the can and hook it to the bottom on the other side of the can.

    • 5

Hold onto the can and let it slide back into the cabinet. Close the door if there is one.
