How to Clean a Seat Cushion That Is Not Machine Washable

Covered with easily damaged fabric, or too big or bulky to fit into a washing machine, most seat cushions require hand cleaning. From autos and boats to living room and patio furniture, seat cushions receiving a significant amount of traffic will eventually end up with spots or odors. Depending on the type of covering, most seat cushions that are not machine washable are easily cleaned with common household cleaning products.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush loose dirt and food particles from the cushion with a stiff bristled brush. Gently scrape encrusted food particles from the cushion with the edge of a spoon.

    • 2

Place a very damp paper towel over stained or spotted areas. Cover the paper towel with a piece of plastic food wrap and weight the wrap and towel down with a heavy object, such as a book or frying pay. Allow the towel to stand on the spot for 15 minutes and then gently scrape the moistened area with the spoon.

Pretreat any stains with a spray-on carpet cleaner approved for fabrics that are not machine washable. Allow the cleaner to stand according to the product directions. Remove the carpet cleaner from the treated spots with the brush.

Cover the entire cushion with carpet cleaner and allow the cleaner to stand. Remove the cleaner from the cushion with a vacuum cleaner. Brush the cushion with the stiff bristled brush to remove any residual carpet cleaner.
