How to Change the Adapters on Propane Tanks

After purchasing a new propane-fueled appliance, you're dismayed to find that the connecting hose is not compatible with your preferred bottle type. Instead of returning the appliance or swapping out your store of unused propane bottles, you can use an adapter head to ensure compatibility. Installing and removing adapters is a relatively simple process, but as you'll be working in the vicinity of propane gas, you should take the necessary safety precautions before beginning the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your propane equipment to an open outdoor area. Your work area should be free of heat sources or open flame. Ensure that the valve on your propane tank is closed and the power of your connected propane appliance is off.

    • 2

Unscrew the connecting hose from your propane appliance. If the opposite end of the hose connects to a flow regulator before reaching the propane tank, unscrew it as well.

    • 3

Remove the hose from the propane tank adapter. Most hoses simply screw on to the adapter, but some may require you to lift a locking lever prior to unscrewing.

    • 4

Grip the adapter firmly and unscrew it from the propane tank. Set it aside for later use.

    • 5

Screw your new adapter firmly onto the propane tank. Reconnect the hose, regulator and propane appliance in the reverse order you disconnected them.
